Cyber Scare in Second Life and where are the Police!

On Wednesday’s eT@lking, we had a rather interesting and worrying incident. In fact the first scary incident that I have ever been exposed to in all my four years of using online technology.

The session – a workshop on Second Life (SL) started in elluminate, with slides being shown by Marian Heddesheimer, walking us through how to find where to go, ensure audio worked etc. Unfortunately, some of the participants were late, so missed some of these introductions. As they entered elluminate, I reminded them to have the latest version of second life downloaded.

Halfway through the session, the participants who could, entered SL and were to meet Marian at a predetermined place, while   elluminate and application sharing were still used. However, one of our participants, Penny, who was relatively new to second life, started off at the ‘beginners’ island”. Two participants soon joined Marian in the predesgnated meeting room, but Penny was not to be seen. Next, there was question in the chat from Penny, saying that avatars were asking her age? They then told her she had arthritus and set upon attacking her and jumping on her. This included four avatars and two animals.

Brave Penny was so brave, in that she divorced her feelings from her avatar, kept her cool, chatted to us in the chat window, then used audio to find out how to meet the rest. Quick witted and experienced Marian was soon able to find her and teleport her to safety.

This leads to the following questions:-

  • Who polices second life?
  • How do you report cyber crime?
  • How many unsuspecting newbies have been frightened out of SL, by these cyber thugs at the beginners’ space?
  • How do we keep ourselves safe in second life and virtual worlds?
  • What extra measures do we need to take for our students to ensure their safety?
  • What measures should I take next time, to ensure that all our online participants are safe?

Cyber crime can be reported but the avatars’ names would be required. In those moments of anxiety, the victim is using all oftheir powers to try and ‘get out of there’ without observing the avatars’ names.

Who as advice for us on this problem?

A Minister for Education who invites conversations via tweets!

An interesting tweet, came to my attention during the week –a tweet from our Victorian Minister for Education and Minister for Melbourne, the Hon Bronwyn Pike. Here is what it said:-

Thanks to everyone who has already sent a question @Bronwyn_Pike for the Q&A on Friday – join me online at 1:30 pm for the answers.

The Minister for Education called for tweets regarding either education or Melbourne. Although the use of web2.0 tools in the recent American election campaign by Barack Obama received much media attention, I was wondering how many global  politicians allowed such direct access, and how many politicians in charge of education have actually set aside a session to tweet in real time.

But in the words of HutchHussein @Bronwyn_Pike Are you the first Minister doing this? Great way to broaden direct access to you.

From @bronwyn_pike came the response @HutchHussein Not sure to be honest – but I’m enjoying it and will definitely do it again. Are others finding it useful?

People who tweeted included teachers, members of the labour party, unusual citizens, ABC Radio’s Victorian Political Reporter, mums ,tertiary students and action groups. The tweets can be found by searching for @Bronwyn_Pike. Below are some of the interesting tweets and responses. They varied from general educational content, political discontent andfavourite Melbourne eateries/activities. They were all answered in 140 characters or less.  I shall start with my two questions/ responses and then list some of the others. My  questions:-

  • @murcha to @Bronwyn_Pike Are there plans for all schools to go 1:1 for successful and more effective use of #ultranet?
  • @murcha Thats certainly the way we are heading – free broadband for schools helps!
  • What measures are being taken to include digital literacy into curriculum – starting at grade prep?
  • Check out $250k digital literacy trial http://www.education.vic.gov.au/researchinnovation/digitalliteracy/ and that site will be updated with evaluations from the trial schools. Do you have suggestions of other good digital literacy info?
  • @ceosandhurst some schools already 1:1 in prep, we are continuing to provide more grants
  • melcashen @Bronwyn_Pike Do we expect to see you on Ultranet as a corporate member?

@melcashen Im already on and working hard to learn its benefits!

  • SPOT1706@bronwyn_pike How are we supposed to use all this technology when principals can decide whether all teachers can have access or not
  • SPOT1706 @Bronwyn_Pike in my class I have no technology other than my own and pupils are banned from using netbooks by prin children disadvantaged
  • .@SPOT1706 please email me with more details on this – i want to follow up to ensure access for all
  • @Bronwyn_Pike I simply want to know whether prins can do this and if not I expect action from you I have emailed you before and nothing
  • .@SPOT1706 Its hard to respond without more information – please ring or email my office and I will follow up

melissarog @Bronwyn_Pike Very excited about DEECD Statewide Games Day on Monday – what a great initiative for Literacy & Numeracy Week

  • jaymzdj @Bronwyn_Pike what’s your favourite Winter and Summer activities in Melbourne?
  • @jaymzdj Walking to Vic market and Royal Park are my favorites – any day of the year

Melchashen @Bronwyn_Pike with the focus on technology in Ed will schools receive more tech support?

@melcashen Funded Ultranet, IT coaches, extra digicontent more PD and will do more in the future

Tobyandsamsmum could you please provide some information about unmet demand for primary schools in inner south melbourne?

martyspence What about extending WorkSafe to cover research students in Victorian Universities?

Great use of technology for sharing conversations! Great to see our Minister for Education personally experience  the technology that so many of her teachers and students love to use and witness in real time the powerful benefits that it can bring. @Bronwyn_Pike has said she will do this again. Will you join in next time?

eT@lking: Workshop in Second Life

A scene from the Second Life space

Marian Heddesheimer, an online tutor from Germany, was our presenter for this week’s eT@lking session. The topic was “Second Life” and the session was workshop in nature. Marian ably led us through a series of slides which explained how to find

  • educational destinations or landing spots that might be of interest to educators
  • how to move, change direction
  • how  to get sound etc

Then with some fabulous professional application sharing and expertise, the elluminate screen showed the space where Marian wanted us to meet him. All participants who had downloaded the latest version of second life were able to join him here. Those of us who were unable to get in could still observe what was happening.  Marian explained the education notice board, displaying “New Citicens Incorporated” and how to find PD sessions etc ‘in world’. A fascinating workshop! Thank you Marian!

Making the Impossible Possible: Implementing a Virtual Worlds Program in a Traditional School Setting

Innovative and determined Lucy Barrow gave a fascinating presentation and insight into the uptake of Virtual World Environments in a traditional school, Ballarat Grammar, Victoria, Australia where she is teaching. She shared her knowledge, experience and student outcomes and amazed us with what has been achieved within 3 months. Great support was shown by @jokay from JodaydiaGrid and  Bron Stuckey the facilitator and co-ordinator for Quest Atlantis. Listen to the recording  Here is Lucy’s slideshare presentation

From the chat came the following:-

  • indeed.. things move fast in virtual worlds ;).. even the snails 😉
  • virtual worlds in education are slower to get picked up than other technology, don’t you think?
  • You’re correct – the literature shows this.  It’s had greater take up at tertiary levels
  • Quest Atlantis http://www.QuestAtlantis.org
  • http://quest-atlantis-teaching.wikispaces.com/
  • QA is such a brilliant starting point for schools.. woot Bron and the QA team
  • It is FREE to use, train and implement for students aged 9 15 years old
  • Next QA teacher induction begins Monday August 23rd
  • http://atlantis.crlt.indiana.edu/site/pd_list Asia-Pacific Registration Code: 156257
  • all the teachers i know who have done QA training have raved to me about how good it is
  • Great that students feel safe – recognise this as an important element of virtual worlds
  • BronStuckey: We have filters, live chat monitors and send teachers transcripts of exemplary chat as well as breaking rules – it becomes the teachable moment to counsel students about their behaviour
  • I think seeing virtual worlds as a continuum of learning is a VERY healthy attitude – use different worlds K-12
  • jokay: Sadly Linden Lab announced that the Teen Grid will close shortly
  • Quest Atlantis is not heavy on bandwidth once the graphics have downloaded – they cache on your client computer.
  • Opensimulator is an open source platform… it was originally developed based on the Linden Labs codes.. but has developed alot since then..
  • jokay: At this stage I always recommend using a reputable opensimulator hosting service – as they have experience in balancing the load, managing updates and most importantly backing up the content created by users
  • jokaydiaGRID now also offers sims for educators… ReactionGRID is our technical host … http://jokaydia.com
  • can also IM chat in RG via iPad or iPhone
  • one of my AZ colleagues did some fantastic things with teens in Teen Second Life this past year and is now moving to Reaction Grid. http://pesdisland.blogspot.com/
  • you can watch Lucy’s session at the jokaydia Unconference, as well as Sue Gregory and a great seesion on WoW @ http://onlinevents.co.uk/library.html
  • Lucy’s session is @ http://livestre.am/1pmB
  • Jokaydia Unconference also has kids talking about leadership opportunities in virtual worlds like Quest Atlantis
  • jokay: Absolutely agree.. watching kids work together inworld is truly awesome… it NEVER gets old 😉
  • Rita Ellul I am blown away that students can do this with out hours spent liearning how to use the tools in the first place – kids are amazing!  But it’s an indication of the quality of the tools too.
  • Bron Stuckey Yes the really transformative learning happens when the kids design, build, create activity inworld to demonstrate their learning – 3D solutions to challenges.
  • jokay: great point lucy – you can really easily scaffold the process – starting with objects kids can use and customise thru to them creating it all themselves
  • Rita Ellul: Great idea about scaffolding.  Could also help  allay anxiety for teachers who may want to give it a go but are concerned about time and skill.
  • BronStuckey: Kids can learn building in a flash – take a look at these projects that ran inside a week where kids from multiple schools cam together online to build a solution to a world problem like the oil spill http://quest-atlantis-teaching.wikispaces.com/Quest+Atlantis+as+a+Summer+Camp+or+Club – look at the video half way down the page.
  • jokay: Woot for Tweeps… follow the #virtualworlds, #secondlife, #reactiongrid and #jokaydia tags for more info
  • jokay: You can watch lots of great machinimas on youtube peggy search for Ramapo Island to start
  • ISTE info here – http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/Membership/Member_Networking/ISTE_Second_Life.htm
  • jokay: here here.. working in virtual worlds is both super challenging and super rewarding.. people like Lucy and Steve are doing brilliant work and tis awesome to be part of the VWedu network with them! 😉
  • http:krunchd.com/bgsvirtualworlds
  • http://delicious.com/lucybarrow/bgsvirtualworlds
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojbWGpl7bTc
  • incredibly exciting stuff!! you covered so much in such a short time Lucy!
  • Part of the EduSim project
  • Rich’s blog – http://roots.greenbush.us/
  • okay: In my experience the vast majority of kids in virtual worlds are pretty well behaved.. we dont see a lot of problems – particularly when positive codes of conduct are established early on
  • BronStuckey: If you expect the best of kids inworld – they really DO measure up. Infractions in 40,000 kids in QA are so low and so benign – sometimes funny
  • Rita Ellul: Bron, that’s a tremendous credit to the quality of QA – kids are so engaged, they are focused and on task.
  • BronStuckey: Peter Whitehouse (Wonko) is a sec teacher in independent school in Q – has been commissioned to owrk on a  virt world in Active AWorlds for EQ – very interesting design
  • BronStuckey: Qa is a community – and kids donlt want to offend their community. After a while it is very self-moderating
  • BronStuckey: buidling community inworld is important – kids are really learning citizenry

The Ultranet – What now?

This was the topic for an online session in elluminate, on ‘reflections on the ultranet’. In our audience there were ultranet coaches, ultranet lead users, teachers, student teachers and an interested participant from the USA. Here is a link to the recording. Participants shared their ideas and interacted via both the chat and the whiteboard. Link to the recording

The whiteboard was used to discuss the following:-

  1. Negatives and postitives from the Ultranet Day (it was great to see that the positives filled up the board more!)
  2. Topics for tonight’s session
  3. What now – how to fit into the current school schedule?
  4. Ideas for Ultranet spaces
  5. What next?

The Ultranet Revisited screen dumps in a ppt presentation.

From the chat:-

  • Join the guidetoinnovation ning
  • Heather Bailie: ONe of my tweets ended up in the age!!
  • Greg Twitt: we ended up in local newspaper
  • we wanted staff to learn more about 21CL
  • for many schools web2.0 is a new innovation so it was great  on the day
  • Most important to keep up the momentum and give staff time to continue connecting.
  • we have also included a regular ultranet item on the staff meeting agenda
  • We are having friday morning snapshots, and 1 hour PD sessions 3 times a term
  • We are going to be using our staff meetings to make it a priority.
  • ll info regarding PD is now shared through the Ultranet rather than via e mail or intranet
  • I think it is essential that the profile of the ultranet is brought forward and is a “no opt out”
  • we have built it into staff meetings to build teacher capacity in it before student  come on board
  • Georgina: We’ve been part of a seven school online development. Many lessons learnt.
  • IDAM support https://edugate.eduweb.vic.gov.au/olt/idam/default.aspx
  • am a bit worried about bringing parents/students on board when staff haven’t had much success
  • exactly – before we go ahead and start creating spaces willy nilly, we need to be thinking about what we are trying to achieve? What is the purpose?
  • We are structuring which spaces we have and what they are for before asking staff to build them
  • It is very important that schools liaise with their ultranet coaches to help them plan to move forward. They are the ones who have experience and training.
  • seen this happen too many times in the US and it ends up failing plus a big waste of money – training is so important
  • Students will use the system far more than some teachers. As time goes on if teachers don’t get on board then we found students didn’t continue either.
  • IDAM video tutorials: https://edugate.eduweb.vic.gov.au/olt/idam/default.aspx
  • Set up a word or Excel doc and put answers and passwords, usernames  there (for younger students)
  • The coaches help heaps, but staff are essentially being asked to learn a new system in their own time.
  • absolutely agree but the coaches are there to help when it’s needed and to provide training for Lead users who will train people in their schools. It is so important to have someone to call on when there are issues.
  • Create a mentoring system with students. It works wonders in supporting other students and teachers.
  • We created the STAR program that was a personal learning program that supported student learning via the online space.
  • I really hope that our model which includes a heavy commitment to providing training in all schools will ensure that this initiative will be more successful than others.
  • we have created two spaces that everyone must join
  • loonyhiker: really enjoying this conversation – making me see how similar our countries are and dealing with a lot of the same problems
  • I think that techs need to be part of it as they some are missing the link between teaching and learning with ICT.
  • I believe their job is to provide us with a working network etc. We don’t get them to help us teach literacy and mathsso i think we need to seperate the tech from the teaching and learning
  • definitely help with technical issues but I believe the decision was made that their work is focussed on the technical aspects of the school. The Ultranet is not dependant upon technical know how.
  • Can you use iFrame to embed the bookings system?
  • we do ours through excel these can then be uploaded and put in a wiki
  • We’re looking at embedding existing wikis and Web 2.0 spaces within iFrame.
  • It’s important to have an ending on all calendar notices so that they finish in a timely way.
  • This needs to be inclusive not exclusive to ensure all understand teaching and learning.
  • Our tech has been interested in how we are going to use it in the classroom.  Have been sharing all that I have been doing with him.
  • Twitter has been invaluable to my PD on Ultranet
  • Web forms are another application. You can make up a form for people to submit information
  • I’ve made one for library new book requests, when completed it emails to me
  • Is it possible to create a space on the Ultranet between meetings?
  • hitchikers guide to the ultranet is every fortnight on elluminate
  • Look for elluminate innovators in the design spaces…
  • I think I will use an alphabet task as a wiki to start with
  • Look for North Fitzroy PS in Vimeo
