eT@lking: e-Ignite

Note: A big thank you to our fabulous presenters for their willingness and expert approach to presenting. There was a great range of topics and experiences were freely shared. Technical issues and time prevented Penny from presenting. But, she will share her presentation in eT@lking soon.

This week witnesses the launch “Connected Educator”  month, an initiative of the USA. The Australia Series is proud to continue to connect educators across the nation and beyond to the globe as part of their weekly webinars. This week also sees a pilot trial of e-Ignite take place with many connected educators sharing.

Ignite is a fast-paced geek event started by Brady Forrest (Technology Evangelist for O’Reilly Media) and Bre Pettis (of Makerbot.com, formerly of MAKE Magazine). The first Ignite took place in Seattle in 2006, and since then the event has become an international phenomenon, with gatherings in Helsinki, Paris, New York and many other locations. We’re proud to be bringing the format to the Australia Series on a virtual basis – e-Ignite.

Speakers will use 20 slides, rotated automatically with each slide shown for 20 seconds, giving each speaker 5-6 minutes of fame to share their passions and interests and ignite an interest in those who listen to their presentations. ISTE Ignite was brought to the ISTE conference in 2012. The sessions were extremely popular.

Topic description: Web conferencing software enabled year 10 students from Warrandyte High School, Victoria, Australia to work in e-teams with students from Wellington Girls College in New Zealand. As a virtual team students created a website that investigated and compared social networking habits across the schools, explored some of the social issues related to social networking and then reflected on the experience of web conferencing.
Hear Claire Bloom discuss the ‘nuts and bolts’ of establishing a web conferencing-based global project. Learn about the achievements experienced as students worked globally to achieve many cultural understandings.

 

About Claire: Claire teaches multimedia and ICT at Warrandyte HS. Her work has included the development of the school’s network infrastructure and curriculum development in the ICT and cross curriculum areas. Claire is President of the VET Multimedia Teachers Association and VCAA State Reviewer for this subject. She is a judge of the VCAA Top Designs. Projects created by her students have won a number of awards including the Global Virtual Classroom Contest. Other accolades include winning the Victorian WebQuest of the Year and the national de Bono Award for Innovation in Education. In 2006 Claire was named the Manningham Leader Educator of the Year.

Topic synopsis: Learn how to build an eportfolio in Mahara. You’ll gain access to a Mahara system, create your own account and learn how to upload your artefacts and create a view to share with someone. Mahara is an award winning open source software:-  Winner of 2008 New Zealand open source awards and a silver award recipient in Learning Impact.
